      I’m a big supporter of Offline, Solo play / Private Servers.

      I love the look of Oort and I’m sure it will turn into a great game. What I’m not keen on is being forced to play with the rest of the world.

      I want to be able to host a dedicated server for my friends and family, and when the mood strikes, to play solo and undisturbed by others.

      I love sandbox games – what I don’t love is seeing a landscape littered with random builds, giant wangs, a mismatching hodgepodge of themes and styles and the general rubbish that comes with an open and anonymous multiplayer environment.

      They might consider it, if it’s something people want maybe? You never know. I approve though.

      I’m very much for this sort of arrangement. I’m very subtle when I say I’m not to be found for some large wang in the middle of a beautiful landscape. Perhaps they can have one planet especially for this sort of goofing of? Since we got portals, it doesn’t matter much, we can easily jump from one planet to another. Just as long as the look & feel of a particular planet is maintained, and doesn’t create a clutter of say, futuristic buildings next to a Hobbit hole, I’m happy. It doesn’t even have to be a private server for that, really.

      I would really like to se servers people can have for themselves especially for at the sad point in time in maybe 20 years where there is so few people playing the game that you need to close your own servers 🙁 This way the gam can live on without them. It is important though that the privately driven server aren’t connected to the official ones.

      I dislike the idea of true offline servers. To have own servers would be a good idea (everybody should be able to have it’s own kingdom, hurrayy ;D ), but not truely offline. If people are offline, they would be out of the eyes off all the other players Which will lead to the cries like “wuaaaah, this game is dead!”, wich are heared in all MMOs if the main city is not crowded like hell. At least they should be reachable by inviting/asking for invites (Like in the housing system of Wildstar, where your seted neighbors can visit you, but not chance something (only if you allow them to).

        I agree with you. There shouldn’t be any offline server.

      I’d not go so far as say there should not be ANY offline servers, but if a player had a single world, or a bank of worlds they could load off their personal computer, and a character that could NOT be linked to the online version, I see no reason why a player should not be able to play offline. Heck, they could sell physical disks that offered an offline mode, much like Diablo II did. Your offline character and online character could never meet, but if you wanted to play offline you had the option!

      Well, I think that even that can be fatal, cuz from all D2-players only a small group played online. In Minecraft even lesser (at least at the beginning). Oort is not the “Big new Star at the game sky” like D2 in early days. There will not be a million players playing it. And many will only play offline of they can, cut they were used to it in their Minecraft days. And that will lead to lesser filled servers, which leads to a problem for the game.

      But what’s with owned worlds online? That could be a solution for those players. But I would prefer this worlds without resources, cuz gaining resources (next to farming, which would be no prob) should always happen online on the main worlds. It’s an MMO.. Not another Minecraft 😉

      I don’t think offline play will harm oort any more than it harmed Minecraft. I think the largest reason so many did not play Minecraft online in its early days is because it did not feature online play itself. You had to know an address or even get special launchers to go online, and even then it was often out-dated versions with anarchy and grief everywhere you went. Offline is a good place to plan builds when resources and competition are not a factor. All they have to do is insure that wealth and items gained in offline can not translate to online, as this provides too many opportunities to hack or cheat. The dev’s are offering the option for private rented worlds which make a good middle ground, but a player with a tight budget who just wants to play by themselves probably can’t afford to rent an entire world.

      What if the rent can be payed with an ingame currency… And only have to be payed more then once it it’s a world with resources?

      I think it’s an MMO and as such it shouldn’t offer a offline mode. Give them the Privat Servers but not an offline World. You want to build your creations first without competition? Competition is one thing everyone wants from Oort. We all want the multiplayer experience. Why even buy an MMO if you want to play offline?

      A singleplayer game has to meet completely other expectations than an MMO. I really don’t want Oort to be dragged down just because they want to attract Offline Player too.

      And by the way. The Dev in the post you mentioned didn’t say anything about offline play and I really hope it stays that way.
