I have a group of friends with whom I would be playing a game like this, and the constantly social, connected experience wouldn’t appeal to all of them. Some of them don’t even have consistent internet access.

I love the fact that the game is being built with multiplayer as a focus, but the inability to play in a privately hosted world would be a deal breaker for many that I know. I hate to bring up Minecraft, but I consider the ease with which you can play with friends in a controlled world of your own as its biggest strength. Considering this game has the potential to be superior to Minecraft in nearly every other way, I’d hate for it to fall flat in this respect.

I am definitely excited for the multiplayer vision of the game, and I understand the developers wanting to foster that. I also understand that renting private servers may be seen as a substantial source of revenue for the game. But is there a demand from people like me who would prefer a way to play with friends without having to worry about the global, multiplayer experience getting in the way?

this is not minecraft, as far as i can read its going to be online servers at all times and ya cant play offline, so if you really want to play only with friends then you gotta rent a server, if you are maybe 10 – 20 people that split the price i dont think it would be so bad.

That’s certainly how it’s looking. I’m interested in the game regardless, this would just limit how many people I know who would be able/willing to play. The multiplayer features look great no matter what.

I don’t think renting a server would be so expensive that you’d have to split the bill with other people.

I was hoping that we’d be able to have the option of using our own rigs as dedicated servers, perhaps paying a “connection” fee to connect to the greater network.

They’ve also talked about an offline mode.
They won’t focus on that anytime soon but after the game is released and lots of people demand it they would think about it.
The post is somewehere in the forums here I beleive.
      Couldn’t find it though 😀

But I have to say that some servers with only your friends playing on (let it be 20 players for instance) could be getting boring over time since this game has MMO gameplay and all that stuff. More ppl = more fun to play. Even if they are strangers. And the beacons are helping you to claim at least a bit of land 🙂

Sadly, in my experience, nothing ruins a great game like other people. I’ve played a great many of them too…Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, WoW, etc. There’s many good experiences in there, without a doubt..it wasn’t all bad.

But what has significantly changed, for me at least, is the addition of 3 little ones that all way to play with me. We’ve played WoW together, as long as I remove their chat windows. Then it’s harmless fun. So whether we all play Oort or not will depend on just how “safe” I can keep them from other people. That’s where Minecraft wins….we have our own home server that our family can connect to from outside if they want.

I’m very interested in this game, though at this point it just seems like “A prettier Minecraft, but with stuff to do.” That’s still enough to make me interested, but the online only requirement is a problem when I consider our whole family.

      We’ll see…

You know, it doesn’t “have” to be all gloom and doom.. I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 for a while now, and besides the obvious scambots, I’ve never really been annoyed by the player community so much to the point where I wanted to ragequit.

On the contrary, when the guilds will be introduced, people will mostly talk to their friends/family really. As long as people mind their language a bit, look after one another and griefers will be banned, things shouldn’t be so bad, I think.

Start a minecraft server and open it to the public. See how much doom and gloom happens. It is real and it is there. The more opportunities people have to grief you the more they will.
