Welp its me again so you know what that means, mad long suggestions (hooray?)

So I was thinking about what rob said and what I was thinking what would be good for the crafting system in oort online seeing as it is going to be one of the main features of the game and really the main system in the genre. What I am going off and what sparked my thoughts on this subject was when rob stated
“We want to allow players to craft a certain portion of basic recipes to start with. But we also want players to be able to experiment and discover new recipes as well as find more advanced recipes from creature loot or through trading with other players.”
First of all I would like to say this is a wonderful way of doing it and I know it will work very well, what I propose isn’t to change this but to ADD to it and give it a nice sense of lore in the oort universe because for the first time in a game I have actually been interested in the back story of the mysterious “oort” race so here we go!”

The easiest way to do what rob proposes is to have recipes that you find and can learn, the same type of system has been implemented in rust and i think it works pretty well, but how can it be made fun, interesting and within the lore of oort online.
I propose instead of recipes we have books you can find on mobs/chests or buy from other players! how does this make it fun though you might ask…

      —How books work—
Most basic recipes in the game that have to do with crafting weapons and blocks even when they get a bit higher up in technicality can be found in standard books that aren’t very rare and can be found on mobs and stuff.. obviously the more advanced the harder they are to find.
When you get to the more “magical” weapons and blocks (which might be the mechanical blocks if they are controlled by magic) are rare books found in oort dungeons or on harder mobs and are written in oortian (which is impossible to read for the basic user)…
At this point I am assuming that character progression and leveling is in the game, each time you read a book (use the book in game) you gain a level in reading. Once you get over a certain number rerading… lets say.. 30… you are able to translate the books for yourself and then once you reach level 50 you can translate and write the books for other players (you cant copy books indefinately though).

      —crafting journal—
So I was thinking on how to make this even more interesting and make sense without having to carry around a bunch of books in your inventory, so this is what I came up with. When you find a book you can tear out the page (recipe) and put it into your crafting journal… players start off with this in their inventory when they spawn with the basic recipes already in it. think of this as the enchiridion of crafting that you are creating yourself.. and that every player creates …
      Hardcore Mode?
If you die with the book on you, you lose the book and have to either get it off of your corpse or start again (you get another book when you spawn). You can also steal the book off of other players so be careful when someone sees you craft that epic sword!

+++++how will this affect the game+++++
-It will introduce new player roles (scribe, specialized crafters, librarian?)
-It will contribute greatly to the player progression in the game on multiple levels
-It will make crafting a part of the exploration aspect of the game
-It makes sense within the lore of oort online and for me makes crafting make allot of sense

      <<<<<Possible Balance Changes>>>>>>>
-Maybe make the books have crafting recipe groups instead of a book per recipe? but you can still tear individual pages out so you can pick and choose and sell the rest if you want?
-Don’t include my “hardcore mode” features
-The numbers in the rarities and progression can always be changed to make it easier or harder depending on what you guys want

You put a lot of thought in that. I really like the idea of having a choice if you want to tear a page out and add it to your journal or just have the book. Because I’d like to have a big library and a handy crafting journal. Maybe you can only have a certain amount in your journal to keep librarys interesting and you shouldn’t be able to tear pages out of books from others/library books.

Edit: I think it should be possible as a player to make books which look exactly the same as generated ones.

Ooo kuma what do you mean by “I think it should be possible as a player to make books which look exactly the same as generated ones.”?

I mean that a player has the same possibilities to make a book like the devs when they make books which generate in dungeons or are drops from monsters. That way you never know if the Book is from a Player or from a Dev. And it makes the game more immersive that way.

I like the idea apart from your hardcore mode imagine you have been playing for months to find a recipe then you are killed and boom it’s gone. Love the idea of your own journal (old Oort leather bound book with magic crystals). I think that it should be an item that you dont need to carry in the inventory that its linked to your character like (archeology in wow) possibly opens up when a certain key is pressed on the keyboard. I like the idea of ripping out the pages so when you flick through the journal the pages will be different colours from age possibly burnt and torn? Possibly a magical mark in the top right of the page different for weapons, tools, magical items etc.

Oh, I love the idea of advanced crafting recipes being earned and hunted for rather than just already known. To add to the idea, what if you also had to be skilled in the specific profession before you could understand higher leveled books? So that not only would you have to find and translate a book to get a high level recipe, you have to be a skilled crafter to understand how to craft that item as well. I’m basically combining the professions idea with your crafting book idea. So like if I wanted to craft a powerful oort sword, I have to find and translate a book. Once translated, I have to be a master weaponsmith to craft the sword. If I translate a book and I am the wrong profession for that recipe, I could either store that book in a library and charge other artisans to read it, or sell it to somebody else. Top level recipes may be so complex, that a player has to “refer to the manual” every time they craft it. That way, a library can have all the most rare books and players crafting those items either pay admission to the library or seek out a copy of their own.

I really appreciate all the comments suggestions new stuff!

@Kuma That is a great idea and i totally understand what you are going for right now!!!

@mr.stuff I rekon flipping through torn pages of magical books all scrap booked together would look sick! i am happy you understood my vision…
The stamps idea would be awesome.. maybe different stamps (old wax stamps like they used on letters) for the different groups of magic! defensive, offensive etc…

@Havok That is also another sick suggestion, I think it would be super interesting to have to be specialized in certain things to craft certain legendary blocks and weapons… it would really add to play progression and the thought of sort specialist classes and players… I think its a good way to have an open style of system where you aren’t bound into learning one thing but you can be a jack of all trades but a master of none… or be super specialist and sell your rare goods or services!
and I LOVE the idea of having to have a group of people to create something EPIC! it would make crafting guilds so fun to be in and it will make you feel like you are a really integral part and to be honest will make me really care about my gear!!!

Okay I just had one more thing to add on why i think this system or something similar should be used in the game!!!

Something super game breaking for me in minecraft was not knowing how to craft something and just going to the wiki and getting the recipe from there… with this system player interaction with other crafters and even just new blocks and weapons they see out in the open will be really interesting

      instead of
WOW! I am going to check the wiki to see how to make that [EPIC ITEM]
      it will be
WOW! hey man where did you find that recipe! can I buy that weapon off of you or trade mats for you to make it?

This will add allot to player on player interaction and I think will enhance the mmo experience in oort!

Yep this way you won’t just get epic items if you are lucky to get some valuebles. That was one of the things ruining minecraft a bid for me too. ^.^
