      Why
When I first tried to chop down a tree in Oort, I remembered my first experiences with Minecraft. I don’t like the system in which you have to break the tree block by block. I ran a Minecraft Server and it was so annoying to see trees half chopped down, because the player didn’t feel like building a little ladder of dirt to finish the last bit of the tree.

      Background
By the time I came across a Mod called “Treecapitator”. With this mod you were able to chop down an entire tree with leaves and everything by chopping down the lowest log. For gameplay perspective you were able to activate the break speed of log blocks which were determined by the height of the tree it belongs to. So you were not able to instantly chop the tree down and the speed was influenced by the quality of your axe (wood, iron, gold etc.). The script of the mod also checked if you were actually chopping a tree with leaves, or if you were actually chopping a self builded wood construction (so then the chopping script didn’t activate and you were only destroying the current block).

Here is a video demo of the mod. Please notice that in the demo the feature of the speed of log blocks does not seem to be active:

      Goal for Oort Online
I want to see a change in how a tree can be harvested. I don’t want to change the time in which you can harvest a tree. So when you would need 2 minutes for chopping down a tree block by block, as it is now, my system won’t change that. Introduce a system in which the total HP of all containing blocks is calculated. When you try to chop down the tree, you have to deal as much damage to the specific block you are trying to break as you would like to break each block separated. So as a result you have to spend the same time with my system in order to collect the whole tree as in the current system.

So I want to introduce a system of comfort and not a system of easy farming. You will have to spend the same time to collect a whole tree, but you don’t have to build piles of dirt or seeing others floating trees because of their lost motivation.

      The Result
Floating trees could be solved with this idea and could also be a solution for the disadvantage in comparison to farming stone for example. There is a specific difference: when you are farming wood, you will be eventually at a point where you have to use some blocks of dirt or similar in order to reach the upper logs. When you are collecting stone you only have to dig into the ground and you are happy. Logs are a very different and unique type of resource, so lets solve this disadvantage!

what I do not want to read here anymore
Ok I recently edited my initial post and with this I want to direct the discussion to the direction I want.

I don’t want to read “oh, no instant tree chopping like in the video”. Yes like I said, my introduced feature of the mod is not covered in this video and I don’t want to introduce an instant farming system to Oort Online. I only wanted to give you an idea of what will happen when you dealt the total required damage to the tree.

So what do you think guys?

I totally agree. I remember the first tree I chopped down in Starbound, and I was so pleased that the whole thing came tumbling down into blocks. I think the reason it happens in Minecraft is a limitation of programming as it was developed, and the idea just stuck.

Maybe they could make it so that the more wood and stuff that is on a tree the longer it takes to chop down? Like the blocks are linked and gives it, it’s own HP bar when chopping so you don’t have to worry about going up and gathering every block?

Yes I used this setup for my Minecraft Server, so it took longer for a huge tree (20-30 Seconds with a stone axe). The time for chopping down a tree drops by the used material.

Idea if possible why not have the tree topple over like in real life?

Like the devs of oort could probably make a cool animation for tree chopping maybe even have sraps from your hand if you don’t have an axe.

second part wasn’t the point of what I was trying to explain. so like if you cut a tree just have it fall over that would be cool I like the mod and all but having everything just break down that fast is a little bit of a turn off to me personal. I love games that have the tree actually fall over this would also deal with floating trees and players wouldn’t have to make ladders to get everything at the top. also if it falls you could still have the leaves break down that would be fine. But if the devs could make something like that it would add to the game and it would be more realistic. lol

Agreed, chopping trees needs to be much less tedious. At the very least have the whole thing fall to the ground before you have to break it down further.

The thing with a tree fall over could be a bit tricky and maybe annoying. Imaginge you are in a dense forest and you are copping down a tree by destroying the lowest block to let the tree fall over. The tree will fall, but maybe only into the next tree near by and the blocks will only drop into the treetop. So you would have to chop down the next tree in order to get in range.

The HP-Tree solution would be much better, so the tree will get a HP based on the number of blocks. In order to chop the tree down you have to deal the calculated damage to the tree, this HP or the time to do this could be influenced by the quality of the axe. Wooden axe is very slow, stone axe is a bit faster and so on. Please keep in mind that the video demonstration doesn’t cover the HP-Based feature exactly. When you would activate the feature in the mod it would cost much more time to chop down a tree.

What about having 2 types of tools, one for chopping the intire tree and another one being “precise” if you just wanna edit a tree to build arround it for some reason (in case of 2×2 blocks or more in thinkess)

Maybe the first one being more expensive?

This could be an option for using logs in your building. It could be also possible to introduce a logic into the script which decides if you are currently chopping a tree or if not. For example if the object you are chopping and which consists of logs has leaves. Furthermore does this object which could be a tree is above a specific height? If Oort Online only has trees above a specific height, this logic could exclude some elements in your building from being chopped down.

The whole kill the tree fast think just kills it for me completely and having 2 tools doesn’t really change things if I get a good tool and high boost or perks and I want wood to sell why not just level the hole forest right.

next I want the ability to kill any player or monster with a hit of one key regardless of skill, level, and health and all that jazz so that my pvp rating goes up or I can get more loot.

maybe creative mode in the main servers so that I don’t have to harvest mats since economy doesn’t really matter might as well break it.

making trees easier to break just makes wood less valuable I think you should have to take your time and cut the wood up its reasonable and realistic. It would defiantly make it a better experience for me the fact that they did make it able to fall down or I did have to work for that wood and other players spent time and effort to build and harvest all that wood est. est.

I do completely agree on the floating tree part thou.
Making the tree just poof should be a mod for people that want to use it in private servers or on there own server that’s hosted by oort.

I don’t want to change the ‘how quick’ but the ‘how’. My introduced system will require the same time to collect all blocks like harvesting all blocks in the current system. The only thing what will be dropped is the annoying ‘build a ladder of dirt’ thing, because maybe 20% of the players are in the mood for collecting the really last block of a tree. Furthermore, when you say that you want to make cash and you are going to kill a forest for some bucks I don’t believe that you will take the time to harvest the last bit of the tree out of your range, it is not comfortable 😉

I believe Oort is not going to be a set environment, Weather and other types of disasters destroy the surface blocks and player made changes. Based on some situations the world will try to regenerate itself. I think trees will simply regrow being the whole tree or what was removed. I do think the tree would be more realistic if it fell over or as you chopped it could be pulled towards the ground with gravity.
