I have not yet started playing, waiting for my adventurer steam key to arrive. That being said I do not know what is being promised or what has come. I was curious if there were any plans to create a sort of setting where you could choose for waves of enemies to attack during phases like night. Adding defensive towers which you can craft to stop enemies from storming your home would be cool.
Maybe they can enter through portals that appear at night randomly in the world but outside your initial spawn or however that works. Maybe have it either start off really slowly and get progressively more difficult the more time that passes or have it be something that the user can initiate themselves via a craftable and placeable object. Games like these are great and all but adding a little constant heat is always nice.
Example: Terraria had blood moons and even night time was brutal at times at lower levels. Chests and diverse loot in Terraria is what made it very interesting for me and gave me plenty of hours. I can’t say I enjoyed minecraft as much because I never really played it long enough with friends online.. the online was too difficult for me to find friends to play with. This game looks promising but if it is 90% building I will get bored fast. So this is just a suggestion of mine, something I would like to see. Maybe a simple warning before entering someone else’s realm that it’s a realm with enemy wave systems so people don’t just run in and die without knowing what they are getting themselves into.
tldr: Craftable defensive towers and a way to initiate enemy waves that invade from other dimensions.

That’s a good idea, there could be something like that through events or summons, especially near ancient temples and ruins.

You can craft a keystone to open a portal to spawn a wave survival world. That if you last till the end you get loot, and if you die you get the boot.
