To Inform players entering an area, or to simply leave a message for others while you’re offline, I propose a placed customized notice board.
Firstly, I’d like to say this is NOT a simple sign like you would see in minecraft. I envision a item that is 4 wide x 3 tall and can be placed on walls or stand alone. When clicked, it would open 12 slots (also 4×3) where notices or quests could be posted. Messages would be shown in one of two colors; one color for quests made by players, the other for notices. When you click a message to read, it would then open a quest log or text box, respectively. Space could be limited to about one page-worth of text.
A player would navigate the board much like the player inventory. When clicking the board, a pop up grid appears with the title of the message highlighted in a color representing either notice or quest. When you open a message, you can then scroll to the next message or return to the board’s inventory screen to click another message.
These could be used to notify players of rules for a city, tolls for entering a zone, give directions to important features, advertise looking for groups for a raid, offer trades for goods, give notice of bounties or even rewards for quest deeds.
Additional possibilities are that a notice board could pay quest rewards or bounty rewards, possibly handle trade transactions, though I’m not sure how the mechanics for that would work.
Let me know what you think of this idea, guys! I know signs are still needed, but I feel this fills a need that was never even considered in most other RPG games. I also like the idea of a clean interface to interact with, rather than a wall of signs with only a few lines of text on each of them. Animation and rendering would be easy, as you only render the board, then overlay the messages on top of that. The color coding is to see at a glance if messages or quests are available from a distance, without having to interact with the sign. You’d simply color the pages on the board accordingly.

I think this is a great idea. This seems perfect for the guild system and posting all matters including quests, recruitment, raid notices, party requests. Also like you said this sounds great for a trade notification board. I definitely feel it would make some aspects easier; if a player isn’t online and they want to trade an item, putting up a notice and attaching the item would be helpful.
I could see this sort of thing in larger towns or guild halls, areas many players would pass by. I know if I came to a new town I would love a notice board I can walk up to and read about certain news and events, see who is wanting what, and maybe get a description of what is located where in the town.
Color coordination sounds great too. Personally when I join a new server on Minecraft if I see a wall of hundreds of signs I either skim through a few or I turn the other way and figure stuff out myself. I think this is partially due to the basic and bland structure of Minecraft signs. If Oort included this colorful informative notice board you suggested, I know I would read and use every one I passed.

1. We have plenty of city, collab, guild, faction, etc – stuff coming, includig noticeboards.
2. The player names are just debugging at the moment – they’ll not be there in the future. (Unless maybe you craft some special guild name id thing.)
Boom. confirmed by james austin dev
