The thing about about a game where you build things for fun, is once its not fun anymore, your out of ideas, or your stuck. Its over.
On the other hand, if you spent hours doing something, and it is destroyed or lost. That is frustrating, to the point where you probably will quit the game and never come back.
So where is the balance?
I am here to advocate that the games survival mechanics must be paramount, as i feel that they are one of the key core items of a game like this.
But how to make it work?
Do monsters hunt us by night?
Do we hunt them by day?
If I build stone walls, am i “safe forever?”
Is “safe forever” true to a survival based game?I feel that I want to say ” I want to be challenged. To take pride in pushing forward alone or with others”
Block breaking monsters en mass, would become frustrating. They would tear down what you built. Then you build in the sky, or dig underground. Then tunneling monsters would destroy precious minerals on their way to you.
This is not the answer.
On the main page, it states: “…every world is harsh alone…find friends and share resources to increase your chances of survival.”
With this in mind, I began to wonder, could we construct an arcane barrier. One that (with upkeep) would act as shield for our homes.
I see a dark and dangerous untamed world(s). Ones where you must act quickly to secure an outpost. A foothold so that you can began to gather resources, bring them back to your homeworld to gather strength and grow.
Now this… this starts to sound promising, The thrill of running for your life, of exploring a new world, of building something, progressing, improving in skills, abilities, equipment and more. But also, sometimes failing. Because in failure, you can learn more than in easy victories.
When a player reaches a point that they are not threatened in some way by an enemy, then that can be a problem. One zombie may not threaten a well equipped knight, but 100 do. The key is the balance between one monster with high health, and several with low health. A combination is best.
Finally,
I submit two simple ideas based on my comments:
1- Some (if not all) of the worlds, should be very hostile and dangerous. Perhaps so much so that you will have to come back later. Some sort of ranking, Normal,Difficult,Dangerous,Impossible.
(i would love to sneak into an impossible world and grab some great rare gems and escape unharmed!) Mhuhahaha!
2- You can craft magical barriers, powered, requiring some upkeep, to provide small safe havens. Perhaps personal barriers for travel.
I put forth these thoughts to help shape the game to come.
