Yeah, this one is a (minor) headache for me now. I had some nice blue stone brought in from Storial that I was using to build a bridge. I kinda sorta fell to my death and when I came back to the bridge, harvesting the stone just gets me the wrong sort of stuff. Progress halted until blue stone comes back. 🙂

@Padraigo — I don’t believe fair has anything to do with it. I’ve seen a lot of PVPers in my day (going back over 15 years now) and not one of them struck me as the kind of person I’d invite over for a Saturday afternoon picnic.

Of course I won’t be on PVP worlds–they’re not nice places.

Gravity would be really weird on flat worlds. The farther away you were from the center, the more it would feel like you were walking uphill.

I’ve been to the SW corner of Vaisier and left a torch there.

Meanwhile–wrapped worlds. Not necessarily spherical–cylindrical or toroidal topologies would be fine (and easier).

McDonald’s won’t hire 13-year-olds. There are laws about that. He’d have to be at least 16.

Problem solved–the game was running the entire time. When the window minimized the last time I used the Enter key, the client area size went to 0x0, instead of–whatever seems like a good choice for that. Following a thread of logic I thought I’d see if resizing worked, and it did. The couldn’t contact Steam API message may have been spurious because of something I clicked in the context menu opened by right-clicking the icon in the app tray.

Steam is set to auto-update the game. The client EXE is dated 04FEB15, and displays version 0.1.0 in Properties|Details. The steam_api64.dll file is file version 2.30.48.16, product version 01.00.00.01, last updated locally 14JAN15.

My connection to the internet is 60Mb and running quite well (you can tell because I’m posting this message). It doesn’t appear to matter whether I have Steam running or not. The memory-resident web helpers are always running, and starting the OO client prior to this would generate Steam activity (daily news, etc.). I’ve almost always used a desktop link generated by the Steam install, which is a URL forward to steam://rungameid/324510, to launch OO; until this morning I didn’t know where the actual EXE was.

Based on reading that I infer an issue with Steam, but haven’t any idea how to remedy it.

Logged back in later and it was fine. I’d walked a good darned distance across the landscape before it happened.

One notes that the game is far from street-ready, and the community consists solely of early-access buyers. (It’s in a pre-alpha-ish stage. Were you expecting something different?) In its current state the game is ‘chat and build,’ with a very limited chat range. Learn to navigate, gather, and build, and be ready for when new features come along.

As for finding certain blocks–the ‘P’ key is your friend, as is building a block bank somewhere on your chosen primary world. There’s plenty of lovely stuff out there to find and mine–with infinite mode on you can do a ‘remove and replace’ wherever you are and then carry it home (not by respawning!) and put it in your bank. (Which is not a game thing–it’s just a part of your home area where you dump blocks, in case that wasn’t clear.)

Keeping your home area far from the capital discourages predation. 🙂

@Padraigo — yes, looting and killing sounds like the basis of a stable civilization. Why is it that we whine about the lack of world peace and the fundamental inequalities in the world, and yet the first thing we do in a game is declare our intent to go looting and killing? Apparently we haven’t the intellect or soul to actually get along and support each other.

One hopes that in the real world looters and killers aren’t looked upon with respect. So, I’m putting THIS out there: I will be standing with those who defend against looting and killing.

For the record, I don’t do PVP. As I have a sneaking suspicion that this will turn out to be a primarily PVP game, I fear I won’t actually be playing it once it hits the streets.

I don’t suppose you could expand that into something the non-Steam-savvy could fully comprehend? You have a what and you want to do what with it?

My fear at this point is that Oort Online might become the same as every other game out there–because the incoming suggestions seem to be based on picking items from the vast game buffet already out there. (I had to look up “skooma,” by the way. Oort Online–in fact, no game–needs narcotics.) So far we seem to be more interested in the chrome than in the steel underneath.

To me, it looks like Oort Online is an exercise in economics. Breathing underwater or leaping over obstacles is interesting, but the ability to lay down territorial barriers and deal in materials of varying values implies that each race should have something by way of skills in the economy. The shortest block type clearly works on the supply side, which implies that the tallest block type would have to work on the demand side. Perhaps the tall type is a good overland explorer, but a terrible digger; the shortest type is a great digger but slow overland (particularly going over mountains). Right in the middle is the two-tall, with average skills in both.

I see teams of tall and short working across the worlds, with the talls laying claims and the shorts working them. That leaves the mids scrambling a bit, doesn’t it? Obviously there’s some balance issues to work out here, otherwise no one will play the mids. I’d thought about giving the talls some sort of trading bonus skills as well, but haven’t thought about how to balance that out among the other two types. (Considering that it’s not yet 7AM where I live, I’m amazed that I’ve done this much thinking.)
