I saw this as well with the white ‘coal’ blocks on Vaisier, but it takes a long time to happen. I think in the case I saw it had to do with trying to fill a gap beneath an existing block.

Not pointless at all–it’s nice to get some validation for our opinions about whether the game has legs. (Which, since we’re here, we must believe it does.)

I’ve been building my stuff on [redacted], pretty darned far away from the capital. It’s actually very difficult to get to my location, since it’s mostly hemmed in by really aggravating mountains. I might ask for some protection via a capital beacon, but I can’t decide which parts I really want to protect: the college (with basketball arena and football stadium), the resort hotel and spa, or the mall? They’re sufficiently spread out that the area might be too large. (The mall’s not finished yet, should you happen by and wonder why it looks unfinished.)

    It certainly would.

I suspect the worlds would end up (logically, not physically) cylindrical, because it’s very difficult to map spheres using orthagonal coordinates–the preferred system would be polar coordinates, and I don’t think the engine works in polar coordinates. (Or, to put it another way, I’ve never seen a voxel engine that uses polar coordinates.) The advantage of a cylindrical world is that all the blocks are the same area, which they aren’t on a proper cylinder. From there, when you cross the north “pole” if (X,Y) => ((X + W) mod W,Y) then you’re on a cylinder; if (X,Y) => (X, 0), then you’re on a torus. (Even though the map axis coordinates appear to range from -4095->4095, internally they’re probably 0->8191 at the current size of Vaisier [the only map whose corner I’ve visited], and eventually 0->16383 if the memory scaling isn’t an issue. That’s why I didn’t go from Y to -Y.)

Meh. Just make all mobs everywhere Space Robot Ninja Pirate Zombie Monkeys and get it over with.

Never did care for horror movies.

I went to the SW corner of Vaisier, and based on the coordinates it’s 8km^2. I think the renderer might be amenable to a toroidal mapping (spherical mapping is a pain in the rear) but only the Oort team knows that for sure–in any event, I’m going to ask that the worlds be toroidally mapped so we can’t paint ourselves into a corner. 🙂

Based on what I’ve seen for global and zone chat in other games (and I’ve played a lot of online games over the past 17 years), I’m recommending against global and zone chat. In fact, given that there must be players behind that chat, I’m almost ready to recommend against the game having players. Nothing ruins a perfectly good game like players.

Totally didn’t. As Gamera is a friend to all children, I am a friend to all cows.

I’ve never seen a cow in a sleigh. And yet, this particular bovine insists that it’s fun, so that must have happened.

    Happy merry whatever, y’all!

I got stuck once. I assumed it was an issue connecting to the server and waited awhile. I wasn’t stuck on the loading screen, though–it was just a blank screen. Haven’t been able to repeat it yet.

@Zouls — well, anything might happen, but the thing is that North and South are conventions. I don’t have a problem with a planet rotating every which way–but there ain’t no East Pole.

    I didn’t do it!

I saw lots of digging around there yesterday but I couldn’t tell what was yours and what belonged to the other person I saw there.

Which is pretty spectacular considering I’d removed them on the 10th. What the heck did you alter?

I went a fair distance (in one direction, anyway) on Selta and couldn’t find any desert. I found a body of water that I didn’t have the time to cross, so I stopped. Where is your town going to be built?
