I just found out that we’ve got a wiki, which may be the best place to compile this kind of info: http://www.oortpedia.com/Main_Page
DarkicusMember>love and friendship
I joined your steam group! ^^
DarkicusMemberI wish we could kind of merge posts into one thread- here are my related ideas-
http://oortonline.com/forums/topic/water-mechanics-2/
http://oortonline.com/forums/topic/concrete-toolmaterials/
Could use the same tool-block to create pools of water rather than concrete. I don’t think griefing with this will be a problem if you limit water collection somehow. The problem is really with ‘infinite’ water springs, which perhaps should not be moveable by players normally.
Also, beacons probably need to prevent flooding too. I’m starting to imagine them more as shield domes at this point.
DarkicusMemberI like the idea of playstyle perks- right now it looks like races will lean more towards one playstyle or another, but adding a second layer never hurts. The builder race might be best at construction, but the tiny race, underwater race, etc have a lot of potential for building too, which is where this second layer comes in, to supply perks regardless of race.
It actually sounds like a class system now that I think about it, but less explicit. It certainly would be good to develop skills and abilities naturally through gameplay but perhaps it doesn’t need to be a ‘secret’ feature. Although I do think some subtle mechanics would be nice too. I’ll give it some thought of my own.
Would be interested to hear what others think.
Kind of reminds me of the Haven and Hearth’s belief system, but with greater complexity and more different kinds of effects. ( http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/Personal_Beliefs )DarkicusMemberI’ve also been spotting these small mysterious lighting bugs following some terraforming and construction, but I haven’t really investigated it yet.
DarkicusMemberIf you’re still looking for peeps sign me up! I was thinking we needed a steam group, but this new “community hub” might make that unnecessary when we finally get it. I’d love some group builds either way.
DarkicusMemberDitto, I think a lot of us would like to help out in some way at this stage. They tweeted that they’re looking for an ass kick game-designer, but what a designer is- is really a facilitator for creativity and problem solving. Thing is, by my judgement at least they’ve already got the tools and the mindset to make the magic happen.
First thing a designer would do is sit down all the stakeholders together- and the surveys are a way of doing just that. With improvements to the community infrastructure we can engage in the process of testing, brainstorming and providing feedback perhaps to a more useful and engaging extent. The community is the lifeblood and also perhaps the greatest resource any game can have, so building a functional bond is hella useful.
What you want carlos is probably twitter- send them tweets! There’s also a backer level for unlocking a dev-chat ingame (dunno if it works yet) but it would be nice if we had a cleaner solution.
Forums are okay but a bit impersonal, and it’s basically a full time job keeping track of everything that’s going on (once the forum gains many more active users). Community managers usually take care of that kind of thing, building a sort of bridge between peeps and devs. A golden design solution would be incorporating a system that automatically helps the community manage itself. Tricky!
Dialogue is super important, you really need a feedback loop to make any progress, and I’m sure that’s exactly what the devs have with one another. Just need to tap into that super computer of community creativity!
DarkicusMemberYep it looks like most news bits show up on twitter https://twitter.com/oortonline
Scroll down theres a vid of some awesome looking new textures to replace the temp ones. Also pink grass.
To sum up; new renderer/textures/visuals, better community hub, new interfaces, crafting, races/characters and combat I guess are all coming together all at once which is why it’s so quiet. Probably also beacons because those are pretty essential right now.
Those debug blocks won’t be missed!

DarkicusMemberUntil they’re fully implemented I believe you have to contact the devs and they’ll stick one in for you. I think they’re quite quick about it.
DarkicusMemberI’ve had jitteriness as well with blocks and movement, a sort of regularly occuring jog. Sometimes I can place blocks that don’t actually get placed and quickly disappear (followed by any block that was placed upon it) so I don’t think it’s a problem on your end. That’s just wip for ya, don’t even get me started on Space Engineers’ server lag x3
