Hi Nyuudles. The current thinking on beacons is that we’ll give you a set number of them to place with your account (5-10 at the minute). The area of land that you can claim with a beacon will start out smaller and grow with time to a maximum size. Lastly, we will need a way of ‘culling’ claims that have gone unused for a long period of time and so will degrade claims/beacons that are no longer in use. The initial plan in this case was to just ‘switch off’ the beacon and allow other players to then claim whatever is inside (ever play Ultima Online ;). But I really like your idea of building inter guild warfare into the system. Interesting….
We weren’t intending on selling a beacon upgrade on launch but if it was something enough people really wanted we might think about it. If so, I’d rather not make it as good as the one from the higher tiers as it was intended on being a unique reward.

RobParticipantHi Daddie. Thanks for the question! The VR answer is that we’d LOVE to do it. We love the potential for VR in an immersive sandbox world too. But, we have to weigh up the development costs along with all of the other features.
If VR is something that the Oort Online community wants then we’ll investigate it. But there are other core features that we’ll be implementing first.

RobParticipantHi Joseph. Havok is correct. We’re offering the game for a one time fee but will later add player rented servers which will allow you to have a little more control of the worlds. We will still always run our own servers but ultimately want you guys to increase the population of the worlds in the Oort universe.
If there’s other things you want to buy we’ll always listen to your feedback.

RobParticipantHi Azro2000! Thanks for the interest in the game and the question. Pricing models are difficult to get right and we’re continually looking at our system to try and make it the best out there.
You’re correct about Star Citizen (and many other crowdfunded projects). They start by aiming for a large-ish goal of funding and then add other features on as stretch goals when they get funded.
We’re trying something a bit different. We thought we would try to be as upfront and honest about the entire process. We’ve already invested a significant amount of our own time and money into the project and will continue to do so. As you already know, games are expensive to make and a lot of crowdfunding projects out there don’t look like they are terribly realistic about the costs and time it will take to finish a product. We’re offering a system where we give you a version of the game as it is and then respond to you the customer and what you would like us to be developing next.
With a crowdfunded game you are always taking a certain amount of risk in backing the product. Will it come out? How long will it take? Will it be what I hope for? Well we already have a version out and ready to play. It’s not the fully featured version we want it to be, but it’s there for you to enjoy today. We’re going to be upfront about development time and schedules so that you know what’s planned and when it’s due to be released, and to make sure it’s the game you hoped for we’re constantly taking on your feedback and asking you what you want to see next.
Don’t worry about ranting! We absolutely want and need your feedback on the in-game stuff, the website, the pricing model and anything else. Without it, we can’t make as good decisions on what to change and adapt.
I hope this has answered some of your questions and you stay interested in the game. Everyone has different requirements that they want to be fulfilled before backing a crowdfunded game. If your’s aren’t fulfilled yet, well I hope we can fulfill them tomorrow or the next day and get your support!
Thanks

RobParticipantHi Godzic. Thanks for the support. If you’ve purchased a package you should receive an email from us asking you to sign up for a ga.me account. Once we get your account username we’ll add you to the prototype users.
We’re currently working on the downloadable version and it should hopefully be available soon.

RobParticipant@robertwyle but I haven’t tweeted much in the past. Ben is trying to get this grandad more up to date. 😉

RobParticipantThanks Camer. Like to get more people involved in this one as it’s a particularly ‘sensitive’ topic 😉

RobParticipantAhh, thanks Daniel. I get you now. That would certainly make replacing blocks far easier. I’ll add it to the notebook and we’ll chat about it next time we have a building brainstorm.
Not sure if we can do sloped trees yet. Have to look into that.

RobParticipantHi again Grimoire. We’re working on the crafting structure at the minute. We want to allow players to craft a certain portion of basic recipes to start with. But we also want players to be able to experiment and discover new recipes as well as find more advanced recipes from creature loot or through trading with other players.
Thanks for the feedback.

RobParticipantSounds like you guys REALLY like building and customizing the interiors of your homes!
Added to notebook.

RobParticipantThanks Thorbjorn. Do lots of you players write in in-game books or papers in any other games?

RobParticipantHi Nixcker. Horizontal portals already work! I have a video of me jumping through them somewhere. I’ll see if I can dig it out next week.
Next week I’ll try putting in a couple of static horizontal portals for you guys to play with. You’re correct though. Player created horizontal portals may need a bit more thought to prevent you all from creating infinite drops and other edge case issues. 😉

RobParticipantYour English is great Afro. We love grappling hooks and have played with them a lot in Terraria and Batman. When we start implementing them we’ll probably prototype a few things and just get them in game for you to try and give feedback on right away. That way we’ll be able to get them just right.
